Double Take Quilt

3232328268_0b4b0069e4

Phew, I made a quilt and a cat! That was hard work! :-) Well, okay, maybe not the cat, but I did make the quilt. Dimitri sure does love it already and has left cat hair all over it. I think he would like me to give it to him.

This is my second finished quilt for the year. So far, I’m feeling pretty good about my projects for 2009. I got this quilt pattern for Christmas and immediately put it together. And by immediately I mean… 2 hours later I had the top finished. I think I was a little excited to get it.

3231493023_57c2005d14

The patten is called Double Take and it is designed by Pieces From My Heart. All of the fabric is Moda. It is brown and orange, although these pictures make it seem more black and orange. The finished size is 50 X 50.

For the backing, I used the remaining scraps I had from the top and then I purchased some Kona Cotton in Brown for the rest. I also used the brown for the binding.

Here it is, all folded up and ready to be used. I just washed it and I love how it crinkled so well. I just did an all over stippling for the quilting (I’m finally getting better at it). Overall, I love it. Now I just need to decided what to do with it.

New Yarn

stash

This is the new yarn I purchased to start my next knitting project. It is SWS Patons in Natural Geranium and I L.O.V.E it!

I’m thinking a scarf, but I haven’t decided on the pattern yet! There are so many to choose from! I’m hoping to start it this week.

I did get the quilting finished on my quilt, but I am still finishing the binding. Finished project coming soon~

I just have to finish the quilting on this and then I will be able to show you the full quilt! Hopefully this weekend I’ll be able to get it finished.

I Did It! I Finally Did It!

I finally learned how to knit!

Thanks to my friends Jen and Rebekah for all their help and advice. And thanks to this website.

I was really inspired by all of the knitting Rebekah was posting this past week that I just sat down and tried to knit again.

3218244506_625f10e87e

This was on my goal list for 2009 and I guess this was my year because it just clicked and I finally got the hang of it. I have been working on this all week, and this is how far I am. I didn’t say I was fast at it, but hopefully I’ll get faster the more I practice.

Do you ever have those moments when the light bulb just clicks on and you finally just “get it”? That is what happened and I have been so excited ever since.

I started simple with a garter stitch dish cloth. I didn’t have a pattern but I just casted on enough stitches until I thought it looked about the right size. Dish cloths are the perfect practice project. No ones cares if they look perfect because they are just going to be used for cleaning.

garter stitch

I even tried to do a few purl stitches. Can you see them there in the photo? Well, hello little Purl Stitches! Aren’t they just the happiest purl stitches you have ever seen? So happy to be different amongst all these knit stitches.

I’m happy for them. They make me happy.

Now I just need to learn to bind off.

Next I’m thinking of a scarf or a hat. Any suggestions for an easy beginner pattern?

Oh and Happy Birthday to my adorable niece, Anna. She is 2 and cute as can be! (I have a full post of her birthday celebration with us on our family blog)

First Quilt for 2009 – Mother Goose

I have been dying to show off this quilt.  It is for my friend who is having a baby girl and we finally had a shower for her today, so I can finally show all of you.  It is seriously one of my favorites!  I love it so much.  I actually finished the top back in November of last year, but technically I finished quilting it and did the binding on January 2, so I’m counting it for this year.

I used a machine that does embroidery (a machine that was donated to the quilting guild by my fabulous aunt) to do all of these nursery rhyme blocks.  I embroidered a different nursery rhyme on a 6x6 inch block and then blocked them with a three inch sashing.  All the fabric is from Joann’s.  It is the Heidi Grace line of A Bird’s Tale.

3174208017_71b2ed8707

It was very difficult to photograph, so I took a shot of the top half and the bottom half.  The top has these blocks: Jack and Jill went up a hill, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Old lady who lived in a shoe, kid who pulled out a plum on this thumb (I don’t remember this nursery rhyme at all), Mother Goose ( I know this isn’t a rhyme but she had to be on the quilt somewhere), and three blind mice.

3180286395_6a503f17fd

And the bottom has these blocks:  three little kittens, the cow jumped over the moon, Mary had a little lamb, Humpty Dumpty, little Miss Muffett, and Jack be nimble.

3180273793_af014b4ab1

This is one of my favorite blocks.  Isn’t that the happiest cow you have ever seen?

3181128200_3bbe7a6dd7

I really struggled with the quilting on this one because of the fabric.  I tried to use a green thread but it matched so perfectly that I couldn’t see where I was going or where I had already been.  So I switched to a white thread.  That was still difficult but I managed okay.  The best part is that since it blends in so well with the fabric you can’t see any of the mistakes.  I did a border around each block of straight lines and the did a stippling throughout the rest.  I did a pink fabric (from the same line) for the binding.  Dustin says that is his favorite part.   I kinda like it too.  The backing is the diagonal print.

3176550253_2b132dd015

I even made a tag for this one.  I hand embroidered this!  I think I am getting better.  This is after I washed the quilt so it is full of crinkle goodness.

3177378750_d0503584ab

I had some left over fabric from the backing, so I made her a matching bib and burp cloth.  Both are backed with a pink flannel.

I JUST LOVE IT!!   It is so cute, right?

La Di Da – Finally Finished

I have finally finished these placemats that I started a long time ago (so long ago, that I am not going to even say how long). I’m super pleased with how they turned out and I’m even more pleased that they are finally done. I usually start a project with full steam and then I get bored and don’t work on them for a while. This is a perfect example.

placemats

I only made two of them because there are only two of us and since they took me so long to make, I figure I should stop while I’m ahead.

Did I mention that they match our dishes perfectly?

3195693058_a918a9d2f5

I used the sugar and creme brand of cotton yarn. I love this yarn! I just did a simple shell stitch (the patten came from this book). I can’t remember how many chains I did, but I just measured my chain against our store bought placemats until it was the same size.

stitch

Normally these would have taken someone a day to make, but for me they took a lot longer. Nonetheless, I’m super happy with them and I can’t wait to start using them everyday.

Thank You Ashley

My friend Ashley made me this fantastic scarf as a thank you.  I know, quite the nice thank you.  She just had a darling baby girl and I sent her some bibs.  As a thank you, she sent me this.  I don’t know where she found the time to make a scarf but I just love it.

When I first started a crochet group in my church, Ashley was one of the only ones that came faithfully every month.  She picked up on crochet so quickly and has since become a master.  Her husband then got a job in Virginia and they moved.  I miss her.

Thanks Ashley!  I love it!

Mass Production of Cards

I have been working for a week on these graduation announcements and party invitations.  I like making cards in mass production but then I get bored of making the same thing over and over and it just becomes tedious.

Dustin just graduated from College with his Bachelors Degree (Triple YAY!!!) so we are having a party for him.  I didn’t think it would take me that long to make all the invitations, but after three nights of working on them, and two trips to the store, I’m finally done.

Did I mention that I am super proud of him for graduating?

Well – I’m really proud of him!

Ribbit Ribbit

3174501268_acecbf272e

This project is going to be frogged. *sniff sniff* It is not working out according to plan. I ordered the amount of yarn the pattern required but I only finished 1/3 of the pattern before I ran out of yarn. My gauge was correct but something was obviously wrong. Maybe I need to use a larger hook.

I don’t have time to finish it or the money to buy more yarn, so I am ripping this out. I will try this pattern again later but I’ll have to wait until I can order more yarn. It was going to be a birthday present for my niece, but I don’t think she will mind that I didn’t get it finished.

The yarn is from knit picks and is the swish wool yarn. I absolutely love it. I also really like the puff stitches on this and think I might use this yarn to make a hat with lots of puff stitches on it.

Oh – Did I mention that I received this book as a gift for Christmas? I love it!

Relay For Life

My aunt is participating in the Relay for Life in her town. Her team is trying to raise money for this good cause. They are doing a raffle on a bunch of homemade items. All of these items are for the home ~ like sheets, kitchen towels, pillows, rugs, wall hangings, etc. She asked if I could make something to donate to this. So I made her some linen kitchen towels and some crocheted dish cloths.

The relay for life is an organization that is associated with the cancer society. “Relay for life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at the local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to raise funds and have a representative on that track at all time during this overnight event.” (Taken from Relay for life Pamphlet)

To find out more, visit their website here.

My aunt is still in need of donations for the raffle prize. If anyone has any “handmade items for the home” that they would like to donate, please contact me. I know she would be grateful for any further donations… and it is for a great cause.

They will be doing the raffle drawing in February sometime. So any donations before that time would be great. If you would like to know more information about where you can get tickets for the raffle, I’ll find out for you.

The Story of Our Bed

When Dustin and I got married, we were given several “hand-me-downs” of furniture which we were really grateful for. You know how it goes… you are newly married, just spent all your money on a wedding and honeymoon, so you are now broke (but happily married). At this point in your life, hand-me-downs are always welcome.

We were given a couple of couches, some lamps, a night stand, an end table, a TV stand, a chair, and our bed (mattress and frame) to help furnish our small apartment. The only new furniture item we purchased was our kitchen table.

Old Bed

After a few months of being married, we realized our apartment was just too small for all the furniture that we had. So we gave our neighbors one of our couches (the nicer of the two). A few months later, our couch was really uncomfortable and practically unbearable. So we decided to buy a futon that was on clearance. Boy did we ever feel like we had gone to heaven. So we got rid of the couch that was practically falling apart and was 20 years past it’s expiration date. Now we had two new items of furniture, but we were still broke.

We really wanted to purchase a new bed, but mattresses and frames were really expensive. And, as stated before, we were broke. So we made due.

The bed we were given was a full size. The size that you have to learn to snuggle together in order to fit on the bed. It was brown and orange in color and looked as if it was from the 60’s or 70’s. It had no support and was really falling apart. But we made due. We had placed a piece of plywood between the box springs and the mattress to help hold it together. Later, when that just wasn’t cutting it, we placed 9 regular sized pillows in between the mattress and the box springs to help a little more.

A year later, we moved again. We just spent what we had saved to help get us into a new apartment so we were still broke. At this point, we had two mattress pads in our futon cover, so many nights we would just sleep on the futon because it was more comfortable than our mattress. Other nights, we would drive to Salt Lake and stay in a motel just so we could get a good nights sleep. Finally we decided that we could afford to get a memory foam mattress topper. And once again, we felt like we were in heaven. It wasn’t a new mattress by any means, but it did help us to sleep at night.

A year later we moved again.

The mattress and frame came with us.

Another year passed, and we decided that we could not stand to sleep on this bed for one more day. We were both having back and neck problems and were not getting any sleep at night. So we started the process of bed hunting. We found a beautiful sleigh bed on the day after thanksgiving sale. So we bought it as our Christmas present. It was such a popular model that it was on back order. So we would have to wait until January for it to be delivered. We didn’t care, and bought it anyway, and it was a killer of a deal.

We then spent two weeks shopping for mattresses. This proved to be more difficult and time consuming that we had originally thought it would be. Dustin likes a firm mattress and I like a soft one. So finding something both of us could sleep on was difficult. But we managed. We found one for a great price that we loved. And it was delivered the the next week!

Excitement was in the air. We couldn’t wait. We didn’t care if we had to sleep on just the mattress on the floor, we were excited. We were getting a new mattress!!!

The day that mattress was to be delivered, we took apart the old bed. As we were doing this, I noticed that our old mattress was a Serta brand. And not only that, but it was an anniversary mattress. A 25th Anniversary mattress to be exact. When the delivery guys came, they hauled off our old mattress and gave us our new one. They said that our old mattress was probably one of the oldest they had ever seen. Wait… what? One of the oldest you had ever seen? Really?

This sparked my curiosity. So I Googled Serta. Guess how old our mattress was (according to the 25th anniversary tag on the mattress)? Go on, I’ll let you think about it.

53 years old!!! FIFTY-THREE!!! Can you believe it? No wonder we were in so much pain at night and couldn’t sleep. 53 years is far and beyond the expiration date. Consumer reports says that mattress usually last 8 to 10 years. So ours was…. way way way past expiration.

After going three years on a mattress that is older than my mother, I have learned a very valuable lesson ~

Hand-me-downs are only acceptable when the item still has some useful life to it.

As for our new bed…. I love it. I LOVE IT! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!! I can sleep at night. I wake up refreshed. I don’t toss and turn. I don’t wake up with every single bone in my body cracking. I get my own space and there is plenty of extra. I JUST LOVE IT!!!!

Yesterday, our new frame was delivered and now our set it complete. What do you think?

bed

Thank goodness our room is large enough, because we bought the king size. We realized that this was a big purchase and one that would last us a long time (the frame, not the mattress. That will be gone in 8 to 10 years and replaced with a new one). So we went with the large size.

Even Sophie likes it.

3160399355_c48b42ffbb

All of our bedding and linens we purchased on the day after thanksgiving sales. So we got some really good deals. I’m really pleased with all of the stuff we got. Now I just need to make some king sized quilts to fit our new bed.

For Christmas my mom gave us new sheets that she had done some embroidery on. I love them. I think they will look fantastic on our new bed.

sheets

And that, my friends, is the story of our very old mattress.

Next up… a new couch. It is time to replace the futon and get some grown up furniture.
